Common HEC-style scale. Some universities use slightly different points or percentage bands.
Calculating semester GPA
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours (quality points).
- Add up all the quality points.
- Divide by the total credit hours.
Example: six 3-credit courses with A, B+, A−, B, A and A− give 65.01 quality points over 18 credit hours, so GPA = 3.61.
Calculating CGPA
CGPA = (all quality points so far) ÷ (all credit hours so far). If your CGPA was 3.20 over 60 credit hours and you earn 3.61 over 18 more, your new CGPA is (3.20 × 60 + 65.01) ÷ 78 = 3.295, or about 3.30.
Raising your CGPA
- Focus on high credit-hour courses: they move your CGPA the most.
- Early semesters matter: the more credit hours you have, the harder it is to move your CGPA later.
- Ask about course repeat or improvement policies if you failed a course.
