How to use the VAT / GST Calculator
- Enter the amount.
- Enter the tax rate (for example 18% GST, 5% VAT in the UAE, 15% VAT in Saudi Arabia).
- Choose whether to add tax to the amount or remove it from a total that already includes tax.
- Read the price before tax, the tax and the total.
How it's calculated
Show the formula
Remove tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
To remove tax from a total, divide by (1 + rate). Subtracting the rate directly gives the wrong answer.
Worked example
These are the example numbers the calculator opens with. Change any of them above to see your own result.
You enter
| Amount | Rs 10,000 |
|---|---|
| Tax rate | 18% |
| Mode | Add tax to amount |
You get
| Total with tax | Rs 11,800 |
|---|---|
| Price before tax | Rs 10,000 |
| Tax | Rs 1,800 |
| Total with tax | Rs 11,800 |
Tips
- To remove tax, divide by 1.18 for 18%; subtracting 18% from the total gives the wrong answer.
- Keep tax invoices: registered businesses can usually claim input tax back.
