Islamic Inheritance (Wirasat) Calculator

Shares of each heir under Hanafi fiqh, used in Pakistan.

How to use the Islamic Inheritance (Wirasat) Calculator

  1. Enter the total value of everything the person left, then debts, funeral costs and any bequest (wasiyyat).
  2. Choose whether the person was a man or a woman.
  3. Enter the heirs who are alive: spouse, sons, daughters, father, mother, full brothers and sisters.
  4. Read each heir's share in rupees and percent, including the amount for each person.

How it's calculated

Show the formula
Estate to share = estate − debts & funeral − bequest (max ⅓)
Fixed shares first: husband ½ or ¼ · wife ¼ or ⅛ · mother ⅓ or ⅙ · father ⅙ · daughters ½ or ⅔
The remainder goes to residuary heirs: sons and daughters (2 : 1), else father, else brothers and sisters (2 : 1)
If fixed shares exceed the whole, all are reduced in proportion ('awl). If something is left with no residuary heir, it returns to the heirs except the spouse (radd).

After debts, funeral costs and any bequest (max one third), the estate is shared using the fixed Quranic shares, then the remainder goes to the residuary heirs (sons, father, then brothers). This follows Hanafi rules used in Pakistan's courts for Sunni Muslims. It is a guide, not a legal or religious ruling: confirm with a qualified mufti and get a succession certificate from the court.

Tips

  • Pay debts and funeral costs before dividing anything.
  • A bequest (wasiyyat) cannot go to someone who is already a legal heir, or be more than one third, unless the other heirs agree.
  • Get a succession certificate (or Letter of Administration) from the court before transferring property or bank accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a son get twice a daughter's share?

In Islamic inheritance a son receives double a daughter's share because he carries financial duties, such as supporting the family and paying mahr, that a daughter does not.

Do brothers and sisters inherit if there is a son?

No. A son or the father excludes full brothers and sisters, so they receive nothing.

What is 'awl and radd?

'Awl is when the fixed shares add up to more than the whole estate, so every share is reduced in proportion. Radd is when something is left over with no residuary heir; it is returned to the heirs (except the spouse) in proportion.

Does this follow Pakistani law?

For Sunni Muslims, Pakistani courts follow Hanafi inheritance rules, which this calculator uses for the common heirs. Shia (Jafari) rules differ.

Which heirs are not covered?

Grandchildren, grandparents, half-brothers and half-sisters, uncles and others. For those cases, ask a qualified mufti or lawyer.
