Tola, grams and ounces
In Pakistan gold is priced per tola. One tola is 11.6638 grams. World markets quote gold per troy ounce (31.1035 g), so one ounce is about 2.67 tola. Ten grams is about 0.857 tola.
What karat means
| Karat | Pure gold | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | Bars and coins |
| 22K | 91.7% | Traditional jewellery |
| 21K | 87.5% | Jewellery |
| 18K | 75% | Stone-set and modern jewellery |
To value jewellery, multiply the 24K rate by karat ÷ 24. If 24K gold is Rs 4,00,000 per tola, 22K is worth about Rs 3,66,667 per tola.
International price vs local sarafa rate
The world price in US dollars per ounce, converted to rupees per tola, gives the international rate. The local (sarafa) rate is usually a little higher because of import costs, dealer margins and demand. Our gold calculator fills in the live international rate and lets you type your jeweller's rate.
Buying and selling tips
- Ask for the weight, karat and making charges separately on the receipt.
- When selling jewellery, shops usually deduct for impurities and wastage, so you get less than the day's rate.
- Keep receipts: they help when selling and for zakat.
